Phonics and Reading

In nursery, children are read to daily by staff and encouraged to develop their language through story times. We use a range of reading schemes (Oxford Reading Tree, Phonics Bug, Big Cat) and colour band the books according to difficulty. Children in Reception start on pink band and move through the scheme at their own pace following regular assessment through running reading records. All children have a reading diary to record reading at school and at home.

Through Early Years and KS1 we use the Bug Club ‘Phonics Bug’ Scheme .

We use the Letters and Sounds Government Document alongside Bug Club for phonics day-by-day lesson plans, resources and regular assessments. Phonics is taught daily to the whole class with interventions to support or challenge those children who require it. We regularly assess children’s phonic knowledge to identify any gaps and to monitor progress.
