Maths
At Warton, we teach maths every day with a short additional session at the start of each day for pupils to review their work, make corrections and challenge themselves just that little bit more! Mrs Ellis is our Maths Lead and is very passionate about the teaching of maths across the school. If you can’t find the information you need here, please just let Mrs Day know and she will be happy to help!
Be courageous- Discover new mathematical concepts, skills and thinking strategies. Participate in discussions and activities where you apply your mathematical knowledge to solve problems. Be willing to embrace challenges and take risks when applying your learning in real-life contexts.
Be strong– Remember that we might not understand a new concept straight away and it’s ok to make mistakes. Overcoming these hurdles and persevering is how we learn. Through maths we build independence in our learning and become more ambitious to achieve an even greater understanding of concepts and skills.
Do everything with love- Take pride in your work and be proud of your accomplishments. Be supportive of your peers and praise their achievements as well as your own.
Our Approach to Maths
At Warton, we have created our own long term plan that ensures that key concepts, such as place value, are revisited throughout the year in a cyclical approach. Our maths lead has created a structure which enables our mixed age classes to work together on the same objective while ensuring the appropriate amount of challenge and support for all.
Willow (Reception) use Mastering Number as the main maths teaching across the year, while Sycamore use Mastering Number to supplement our long term plan.
To develop fluency across the school, we have introduced 20 minute sessions x 4 per week in KS2. In years 3 and 4, we use the Number Sense Maths programme to help develop fluency in times tables. In years 5 and 6, we have arithmetic sessions with a focus on a different skill each half term, for example reordering and partitioning. We have also created a set of ‘Derive and Recall’ fluency facts that children should achieve by the end of each year.
Our Calculation Policies
We follow the White Rose Calculation Policy for each of the four operations. We have been investing in new mathematical resources, which helps to ensure that children can work practically as well as on paper to explore and understand their ideas. As part of the NFER Mastering Number programme (see below) we also use Rekenreks to support learning in KS1.
Mastery of Maths
Mrs Ellis, our Maths Lead, has started a journey with the Maths Hub which over the next few years will embed a Mastery Approach to the teaching of Maths across the school. We are running with two NCETM Maths Mastery programmes, both of which started in September 2021.
1) Mastering Number – This project aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number. Attention will be given to key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception classes, and progression through KS1 to support success in the future.
2) Developing Mastery: This project aims to support teachers with investigating, trialling and embedding mastery approaches within their classrooms. Miss Day and Mr Whorwood are currently half way through the initial two year cycle for this programme.
Progression Documents
Mrs Ellis has worked alongside the Trust Maths Specialists to create a detailed maths progression document which incorporates the National Curriculum Objectives, from Year 1 to Year 6. She has also created a document to show the progression in maths through EYFS, as well as our Nursery provision.
